Visit of the Managing Director of the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (NECCA), Mr. Konstantinos Triantis, at Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park & UNESCO Global Geopark

In the context of the informative visits to the Management Bodies of Protected Areas, on the two days 24 and 25 August 2021, the Managing Director of the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency and Associate Professor of Biodiversity & Ecosystems, Mr. Konstantinos Triantis, visited Chelmos- Vouraikos Management Body, at Kalavrita. The Chairman of the Board of Directors, Dr. Grigorios Iatrou, Professor of the University of Patras and all the staff of Chelmos- Vouraikos Management Body welcomed the Managing Director of the new agency, where the Management Body will soon join.

A visit and guided tour was made to the Observatory "Aristarchos", located at Neraidorachi,the second highest peak of Mount Chelmos, above the Ski Center of Kalavrita, at an altitude of 2,340 m. The wild beauty of the landscape, with the unobstructed view stretching away in every direction toward the horizon,allows the visitor to gaze at the Gulf of Patras and Corinth and the Ionian Sea, as it is located in the alpine zone of Celmos, which belongs to zone A1 of Chelmos- Vouraikos National Park. A member of the Observatory made a relevant tour of its premises, as it has the largest telescope in the Balkans. The cooperation of Chelmos- Vouraikos Management Body with the Observatory is essential, as they coexist in the direction of scientific knowledge and management of the natural environment.

The next day, a visit was made to the office of the Mayor of Kalavrita, Mr. Athanasios Papadopoulos, who warmly welcomed Mr. K. Triantis together with Dr. Gr. Iatrou and Ms. E. Koumoutsou from Management Body, followed by an interactive discussion on issues within the responsibilities of Management Body and its areas for the object of proper protection, management and promotion of the protected area, while committing itself to its contribution.Finally, in the offices and the Information Center of the Management Body, the Chairman of the Board briefed about the the areas of responsibility and other issues faced by the Management Body. Mr. Triantis analyzed in detail the way of the smooth transition of the Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park to the new Agency and the issues of its operation as a Management Unit of the Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park and Northern Peloponnese Protected Areas. He also acknowledged the important and substantial effort that the staff of the Management Body has made all these years in the issues of protection and management of biodiversity in its area of responsibility, as well as the achievement of the integration of the National Park in the UNESCO Global Geoparks, as a valuable tool for the promotion of the local community. The visit to the offices of Management Body closed with an interactive discussion.

As a Management Body, we hope for a substantial and constructive cooperation with the integration of Chelmos- Vouraikos Management Body in the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency, for the protection, management and promotion of the areas of responsibility of the new Management Unit.
